Senior year spirit week is one of the biggest events of the last year of highschool. Costume days, decorated hallways, and ridiculous events are what make this week so special to so many seniors. One of these crazy events is known as the "PowderPuff Football Game"
The PowderPuff football game is the chance that the female population of the highschool gets a chance to represent their grade and class to the rest of the student body. I find this event of spirit week is a good way to keep the female student body present and attentive in the weeks festivities that could otherwise be dominated by male activities (such as the homecoming varsity football game)
This tradition is also a way for the school to really get excited for this week of festivities that are out of the ordinary from the natural school week. It increases school pride while giving students an extra night of the year to spend time with class mates and a break from the constant barrage of homework and studies.
The powderpuff football game pits the junior class against the senior class which also creates a healthy rivalry to bring classes together at the end of the week. Post powderpuff game, I believe that the classes have actually bonded closer than diverged apart and really sets the stage for the rest of the week.

I agree with Chef. I think that the healthy rivalry between the juniors and seniors forms a stronger bond between the classes in the long run. I disagree with what Chef said about getting the female population involved. I think that between the dress up days, field day, and the homecoming football game, I think that there is plenty of opportunity for everyone on to participate in the festivites. Regardless, powderpuff is a fun tradition between the juniors and seniors.
ReplyDeletePower puff is an entertaining even for the whole school because it's different. Not only is it a friendly rivalry between the seniors and juniors, it is also a football game in which the players are all female. A few varsity football players are the selected coaches for each team and they run plays as they would in their games. Powder puff is exciting because it's another competitive event and school spirit goes through the roof for the game. The attendance is high at the game and everyone is cheering for their grade. Overall it's just a good time and gets everyone more hyped up for the big field day events.
ReplyDeleteChef, great way to wrap up the week and the idea of powderpuff. I believe that the idea of it though, which im sure you were trying to explain, is to bring the upper-classmen from more of just acquaintances to friends for the year. For years that has been a standard high school attribute that those two grades "mesh" well together and team up to act as role models to the younger class. That is shown very well as a started in something such as this powderpuff game. However, I believe the powderpuff game should be moved to thursday and field day to friday. That gives people more hype and more time to prepare for the weekend and festivities to come. Friday is the least most participated day in spirit week, and that may change that idea
ReplyDeleteAs a girl, I feel as though I should comment about the Powder Puff game. Football is not my sport, so I didn't participate in Powder Puff this year, but a few of my friends did play in the game. I like the idea of girls getting an opportunity to play and get involved in their part of Spirit week. Girls should have more of these events because they are unfairly represented and this is the time when we can get the most support from the school as a whole. I think it would be awesome to have multiple games or other events specifically for girls so that they can be more involved.
ReplyDeletePowderpuff is a fun tradition for the girls to compete for thier grades pride in a football game. In the wake of spirit week powderpuff is a fun activity that gives the grades a competitive football game to win bragging rights before finding out who wins the bucket. Even though it puts the junior and senior class against each other it is a healthy rivalry that both teams enjoy. It also works as a bonding activity and brings a team and school pride to the girls before the big homecoming football game on Friday night. It is a fun game and has become a tradition at groves as part of spirit week and creates an event that is focused on women enjoying a mainly male sport.
