I thought that watching Mean Girls was a good way to end the gender unit. The movie did a good job of portraying the extremes of gender stereotypes. I think that schools definitely have a group of people that are more well-known, popular, than others, but I think that the portrayal of the "plastics" is over-dramatiz
ed. The want for attention and popularity, though, is accurate to high school life. Also, the "backstabbing" of friends and talking behind friends backs is something you see a lot in high school.
I agree with Bobby. The movie may have seemed like it was "overdramatic" but it was actually a very accurate portrayal of the way high school works, and the different types of cliques and groups that are in it. It is really clear how girls are suppose to act like in society, and Mean Girls is very good at explaining that.
ReplyDeleteWell obviously the movie was dramatized so that it would be interesting to watch. Otherwise we would have seen screen caps of people sending rude text messages to each other and "cyber bullying" one another. Mean Girls really does show the harshness that can be exchanged between high school girls, it just generally doesn't turn into all out battles (although it's not impossible). I thought that Mean Girls was a great way for our class to wrap up our unit on Gender and stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteThis movie to me was definietly related to high school. And yes, I can see where you're coming from on that idea of popularity, but I think there really is no such thing. Each person is classified in a different group like discussed in mean girls. However, you create your OWN popularity in those groups of people. Although people may be more well known at a school, I don't believe that necesarily defines "popularity." This movie, though, shows great in depth detail of how gender plays a key role in a society such as high school. Good obersvations Bobby.
ReplyDeleteI agree with a few points made in these posts. Mean girls was accurate in showing the aspect of the some of the harshness that goes on in high schools and also that it was overdramatized but the movie needed it. We see forms of bullying like in the movie, people going out of their way to get attention, and also some of the different "cliques" portrayed in the movie in high schools today. Just not to the extent as in the film. Aside from the high school part of the film, the movie also went along with our gender and stereotype unit well. In such ways as the ridiculous amount of gossip amongst girls, the popular group of kids only worrying about their looks and clothes, and we even saw some of the "dumb blonde" stereotype.
ReplyDeleteI think that Mean Girls was a good way to wrap up the gender unit. It does a good job at showing some of the groups and different social status that occur in high school. Even though I agree that it was completely over dramatized, it shows the way how girls make cliques and can be nasty to outsiders. It shows the harsh ways that high school girls tend to treat each other. It is a good movie to show how the media creates girl stereotypes that many people watching believe is the role many women play in a high school setting. If it would be more like real life i think there would be a lot less talking smack person to person but lots of fights through messaging and social media sites.
