I think that product placement is a poor attempt at advertising. It is never disguised well enough not to take away from the show/movie and make it sound corny. Here is an example from the TV show "Shark Tank."
As you can see, the attempt at trying to advertise for T-Mobile completely distracts the viewer from the show, and is awkwardly forced into the script.
Bobby, you are right on this example. However, I disagree with this claim. with things such as DVR and fast forwarding options these days in technology, i think product placement is a great idea. Now, in a show such as Hawaii 5-0 that we saw, it is too forced you're right. But in something that is live taped such as like a reality show like the Kardashian's, it has way more effect on an audience than a regular commercial. A consumer is way more likely to buy a product that their celebrity idols are using inadvertely than a paid advertisement between the show
That was a brutal thing to watch...It entirely took me out of the program i was watching and made me want to not continue the program at all. Clearly, they must have realized that this was blatantly obvious to everyone watching the episode. Do you think that they were loosing viewers originally and are using product placement as a last ditch effort to keep their show on the air? I personally believe that if companies want to make more people want there products then they need to become more creative and stop piggybacking off of someone else's creation/television show.
I find that product placement is always the worst examples of hidden advertising. There is rarely any talk about the cars used in movies and TV shows, or the meals that people are eating. No one ever remembers the company that the cars are from, although the logo is present and very visible to viewers. Personally, I dont mind product placement because it gives a sense of realism to the show or movie. I can't count how many times I've seen made up, off-brand products in film and just thought how weird it was. I would much rather use product placement than have the movie industry use made up products that I am not familiar with.
I disagree, i found that the product placement in this commercial was spot on. With a show such as shark tank where the people you saw sitting down in the chairs are criticizing products all day and actually providing financial support to the good products, putting a T-Mobile phone is there was great. These people don't use unsatisfactory products and by having one of them actually enjoying the phone, it gives a bit of credibility to the product. It says that this phone is good enough for these people and if you watch the show, many things are not good enough to these people. Adding the phone in here was good product placement by utilizing a well known show and a credible person.
I agree with Aunt Jemima this example is terrible product placement and very obvious and makes an awkward attempt at advertising t-mobile. But in many other movies, tv shows, and commercials product placement is very useful and does urge people to buy the thier product. If your favorite character in a show or movie is using an iphone i think that many people want to be like them and have an iphone. When a character is using a product it is drawing attention to that product and makes it "cooler" to have since someone famous likes it. It creates a status symbol to have that product.
