The Book Vs. The Movie

Cuckoo's Nest Book                          vs.                                                     Cuckoo's Nest Movie

Between the book and the movie, i see a lot of similarities. To start, i definitely pictured RP as how he is portrayed in the movie. He is that smooth, arrogant kind of "bad-ass" who takes on his role as the savior of the ward. Also, I would have pictured harding exactly how he is: that sophisticated "wanna-be" who gets picked on by the rest of the patients. However, a few things stood out to me that i had a different outlook on when i watched the movie. First, the scene where RP takes the patients out to the boat on the fishing trip... they never showed in the movie that the nurse was not okay with that at first. They just showed him stealing the van and them going off right away. Also, the whole life jacket dilemma did not seen to be present in the movie. Second, and also the main thing that was different to me, was none other than Nurse Ratched. She seems waaaay worse in the book than in real life, and i think that has to do with chief being the narrater in the book and not in the movie. And her looks are not appealing to me as i thought they would be as described in the book. Other than that, the book and movie are both very similar, great stories on the challenges RP and the gang face against the evil nurse ratched. Oscar worthy and winning for sure.

  1. Nurse Ratched really doesn't seem as evil in movie as she is portrayed in the book. But you also have to take into consideration that the book is told from the standpoint of Bromden who has these sort of illusions in his head that make things seems worse than they actually are. I agree that it was indeed a terrific movie but an even better book. It's like most novels that become movies in the aspect that a lot of details and parts are left out but I still found the movie very entertaining despite reading the book prior to watching it. I think it would have been interesting to see how the movie would have been if it was told from the viewpoint of Bromden and less from a following of McMurphy. But all and all I thought both portrayals of the story were excellent.

  2. The movie is all together a different story than the book is. The movie doesn't follow the book very accurately but its understandable for them to do that because of the cinematic necessities. If they kept it exactly like the book it would have been really difficult to show chief's thoughts that narrate throughout the book. if the movie had this or would follow the book much closer but it would not show nearly as well as it does currently.

  3. The movie is very different from the book in a variety of ways. The movie often does not carry out a full scsene that may be in the book and some of the characters are portrayed a little different then in the book.An example is Nurse Rachet, when reading about her in the book I thought of her as a obese, ugly, menacing lady but in the movie she is a decent looking, well kept lady with an evil side.A good point George Forman made was I would have liked to see the book more from Bromden's point of view instead of it being a mixture from him and a slight narrative of Mcmurphy. In all I think it was a terrific movie but was missing a few important details when compared to the novel.
