9/11 Blog
I found the lack of awareness and the lack of urgency by the FAA during the attacks really frustrating. They were fully aware that the attacks were under way, but for some reason kept waiting for something before they took action. In the movie, I remember hearing that an FAA worker was trying to report the second hijacking to her superior officers, but they dismissed her because they were trying to figure out what to do about the first hijacking. I also remember listening to the recording of a phone call between a flight attendant and the FAA and there were spans of 10 or 15 minutes where the FAA wasn't saying anything to the flight attendant on a hijacked plane. The flight attendant was asked to repeat the same basic information several times because of the lack of understanding from the FAA. I also found it hard to believe that the military couldn't bypass the FAA. The Air Force kept waiting for clearance from the FAA, but when they realized that the FAA wasn't going to do something they should have scrambled the jets and taken the initiative. Overall, I can't even comprehend the lack of urgency and awareness from the FAA.

Bobby, I understand where you are coming from and yes i completely agree. However, if you were in that situation working for the FAA how would you process that information and work based upon it? Fortunately, nothing like that has ever happened to this country, other than this horrific event. Unfortunately, though, our team was not prepared whatsoever for this event so you cannot blame them for that. I do think though that there were many many signs of this attack coming and our political and flight team should have picked up on these signs right away.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the lack of urgency with the FAA during the attacks was frustrating. The government should have put much more thought into terrorist defense strategies. It makes no sense why the FAA workers hesitated to contact the military which could have prevented the other strikes. The military should be able to make decisions on their own in a time of crisis to potentially prevent future attacks. The amount of time it took for the FAA to make a decision and to finally realize how many planes were hijacked was embarrassing. It made them look like a joke. Not to mention how the pilots sent from the naval base were headed in the exact opposite direction of the hijacked planes. The whole situation was a mess and showed poor communication amonngst the U.S. Government.
ReplyDeleteBobby is 100% correct with his analysis of the FAA's plan of action or should I say "lack" of plan of action. It seems outrageous to think that the FAA was so unorganized that they could basically get nothing done. We need to make plans for things like these. Especially since we know its possible now.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it should not be possible for people who try to get into our country and don't have the proper paperwork. It should be a strict no. If you don't have correct, AND complete forms then you should imediately get the boot out.
I agree Bobby, I think that the lack of awareness and urgency from the FAA was very frustrating. They should have been more aware and been able to figure better ways to solve the issues in the time of crisis. I think that they should have had a better plan of action and could have been more prepared if anything like that would have happen before 9/11. I also believe that the military should have been the first ones notified and been told strict rules to go and get those planes out of the air. Instead of the planes flying the WRONG WAY! Its shows the major miscommunication and weaknesses of the major agencies and US government.
ReplyDeleteI think that the fact that the FAA was so slow to react is a major disappointment also. It was really interesting to see how much they missed during the process of the attacks. This shows that our country as a whole needs to be cautious, and also aware of what is going on around the world. The attacks were a surprise, but they shouldnt have been. It is essential that we are always protected.
